Cecily Brown

Glenstone presents A day! Help! Help! Another day!, 2016, a monumental painting by Cecily Brown (British, b. 1969), in the Passage of the Pavilions. Deeply informed by literature and art history, Brown’s energetic paintings reference major artists and artworks in the tradition of European and American painting, creating imagery at the intersection of the abstract and the figurative. A day! Help! Help! Another day!, 2016 is a massive triptych, among the artist’s largest paintings to date. The work emerged from Brown’s series of drawings depicting shipwrecks, taking inspiration from the work of Eugène Delacroix, as well as Théodore Géricault’s The Raft of the Medusa, 1818-1819. This is the first time Brown’s work will be exhibited at Glenstone.
