Position Overview  
This associate serves as a “proprietor” of a designated area of the campus and duties encompass all aspects of landscape maintenance including annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, irrigation adjustments, grasses, aquatic plants, weeds, mulching, hardscapes, trash and recycling cleanup etc. All tasks are accomplished according to ANSI and OSHA standards for quality and safety. The associate is responsible for consistently evaluating and maintaining the landscape and the adjacent protected forest conservation areas and takes the lead for planning work within the zone.  This position also assists the Grounds Team with other projects as needed.  All tasks utilize the best organic practices and protocols, including Sustainable Sites, OMRI, NOFA, and others. 

Key Responsibilities 
  • Manage a designated area of campus for all aspects of landscape maintenance. 
  • Hands-on tasks include planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, irrigation repair and adjustments, tree care, deer mitigation, and understory management, such as exotic invasive species eradication. 
  • Schedule and implement maintenance tasks to ensure that the highest detail standards are maintained. 
  • Responsible for a yearly plant infill budget of $2,000 and help organize and complete larger area projects. 
  • Diagnose problems regarding pests, disease, nutrition, and weeds; plan and carry out the treatments within the organically managed system and Maryland law. 
  • Supervise, once a week, a seasonal work force of 4-5 people, giving clear instructions and training to perform tasks to the highest standards. 
  • Mentor Glenstone associates, interns, and RISE students on campus landscape maintenance and sustainable initiatives. 
  • Initiate, design, and manage the installation of area projects. 
  • Utilize observations and research to write reports related to sustainable initiatives. 
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of and around specific outdoor art sculptures. 
  • Make suggestions for needed tools, equipment, and products to improve maintenance and results. 
  • Perform monthly metrics reports of respective areas and initiate needed work from these reports. 
  • Interact with visitors, both on and off property, to convey Glenstone’s mission, including leading guided visitor nature walks and tours. 
  • Participate in property opening for visitor days and special tours. 
  • Responsible to be point-of-contact for grounds needs during weekend visitor days. 
  • Manage a 5S space and be a 5S inspector for additional departments. 
  • This position is considered an essential associate to assist with snow and ice work or other off-hours emergencies as needed. 
  • Perform other duties as required. 
 
Required Qualifications 
  • COVID-19 vaccination and up to date on all boosters. 
  • Minimum of five years of verifiable, professional experience in plant care for a sustainable landscape environment. 
  • 2 or 4-year degree or equivalent experience in horticulture, forestry, botany, ecology, plant pathology, or related field. 
  • Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials in an all-organic grounds maintenance program. 
  • Experience with organic or integrated pest management. 
  • Ability to work at a fast pace without sacrificing quality. 
  • Strong cultural competence, interpersonal communication, planning, and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions. 
  • Ability to physically lift 50 pounds. 
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.  
  • Experience with computer databases, Microsoft Office, and material acquisition 
  • Work hours are Sunday-Thursday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. 

Preferred Qualifications
  • State of Maryland licensed pesticide application. 
  • State of Maryland licensed fertilization applicator. 
  • Knowledge of regionally specific plants and native communities.

Hourly Wage: $28.00 - $33.00 per hour
