Did that leaf just leap? The lesser angle-wing katydid is a leaf mimic insect belonging to the order Orthoptera—meaning straight wing—which includes katydids, grasshoppers, and crickets. Like many of their Orthoptera brethren katydids create noises through stridulation, a method of creating sounds by rubbing together specialized body parts. So, if you hear a leaf singing "katy did, katy didn't”—à la Pterophylla camellifolia, the common true katydid—or rattling with a "Tttt! . . . Ttttt! . . . Ttt" it might just be a katydid telling you to leaf it alone!
