Mosquitofish

Gambusia

Next time you are admiring the Pavilions Water Court, see if you can spot our tiny team of natural pest control. Gambusia (mosquitofish) were introduced into the Water Court to help manage mosquito populations; they are small grey fish of the family Poeciliidae—a family that includes popular aquarium fish, like guppies, mollies, platies, and swordtails. Mosquitofish have an upturned mouth used to eat food on the surface of the water including small insects, detritus, and insect larvae. Due to their resilience in a variety of conditions and appetite for mosquito larvae, humans have distributed Gambusia widely in an attempt to reduce mosquito populations—although there is debate as to the effectiveness of this method, as non-native fish may outcompete native mosquito eaters.
