Visitor Conduct Policy

Accessibility

  • Visitors may utilize the on-demand cart service (including a wheelchair accessible cart) to get to and from designated stops close to the parking and museum areas. There are cart stops at Arrival Hall, the Gallery & on the Woodland Trail (near the Boardwalk).

  • Complimentary wheelchairs are provided first come, first served.

  • ASL interpretation services can be requested one week in advance of a visit. Visitors can reach out to info@glenstone.org to request these services.

  • Requests for other special accommodations (Medically necessary food items, art related sensory objects, etc.) can also be made through info@glenstone.org.

Age Policy

  • Due to the fragile nature of the works on view, all visitors must be 12 years or older.  Visitors ages 12–17 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  • Infants one year and under are welcome and do not need a ticket. Infants must be worn on the body or carried while inside art spaces.

  •  Strollers are permitted on the outdoor pathways but are not permitted in indoor exhibition spaces.

Artwork Safety

  • While many installations at Glenstone are immersive, only a few are interactive. Artwork must be approached cautiously. An arm’s distance (approximately 3 feet) must be maintained between visitors and artworks (including when pointing or gesturing). Unless specifically intended by the artist, the artwork should not be touched.

  • Even outdoor sculptures that are exposed to the elements can be damaged by human contact and should not be touched.

  • To protect the artwork, all visitor bags must be smaller than 8”x8”.

  • Diaper bags and medical exception bags larger than 8”x8” are exempt from the size restriction but must still be placed in a locker while in the Pavilions and the Gallery.

Attire

  • Visitors must wear clothing to include top and bottom coverings (tops, bottoms, dress, skirt, etc.) and shoes. Bathing attire is not permitted.

  • Clothing that displays harassing, discriminatory, or threatening statements will not be permitted.

Bicycles

  • Visitors may ride bikes to Glenstone. Cyclists are not included in the Guaranteed Entry program. Riding bikes on Glenstone property is not permitted. Skateboards, scooters, rollerblades/skates, etc. also fall under these guidelines.

  • Bike racks, water fountains, and restrooms are provided at the Environmental Center for visitors to use. 

  • Bike cleats or other spike shoes may not be worn inside buildings. Building lockers may be used for storage as appropriate.

Demonstrations

  • Protesting or conducting demonstrations is not permitted. Visual displays including but not limited to, displaying or carrying placards, signs, or banners are not permitted. Leafleting, signature gathering, picketing, charitable solicitations, and press conferences are not permitted.

Disruptive Behavior

  • Visitors may not engage in disruptive conduct that interferes with or detracts from the experience of other museum visitors.

  • Running, rough play, and distracting behavior such as shouting and/or chanting, the unauthorized playing of music or video, unauthorized performances, the use of sound amplification and noisemakers (apart from assistive-listening devices) by visitors are prohibited.

  • Video calls or live-streaming, including FaceTime, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Teams, Zoom, or other video services are not permitted in indoor art spaces.

Inappropriate or Abusive Language

  • Verbally abusive, harassing, discriminatory, or threatening statements toward Glenstone associates or other visitors will not be tolerated at Glenstone.

Outside Food & Beverages

  • Outside food & beverages may not be brought on site except for water or medically necessary food items.

  • Food and beverages are not permitted in indoor art spaces unless there is a medical need.

  • Properly sealed infant milk bottles are permitted in indoor art spaces.

  • Glass bottles are not permitted.

  • Picnicking is not permitted.

Painting and Sketching

  • Sketching with pencil in the landscape and art spaces is welcome.

  • Sketching may not impede the experience of, or access to, artworks for other visitors.

  • Use of charcoal, pastels, markers, and paint of any kind is not permitted.

Photography & Video Recording

  • Photography, video recording, live streaming or recording (including reels, TikToks, shorts, WhatsApp, or other platform specific content capture tools) are not permitted in indoor art spaces.

  • Visitors are allowed to take photos outdoors utilizing phones or cameras only. Additional photography equipment is not allowed, including tripods, additional lights, oversized lens, reflectors, selfie sticks, gimbals, or similar tools.

  • Commercial photography is not permitted without prior permission. For the purpose of this policy “Commercial Photography” is defined as photographs taken of Glenstone’s grounds, collection or property for profit.

  • Wedding, engagement or other portrait type photography is permitted outdoors only. Photography must be for personal use only, not promotional use by the photographer. Restrictions on photography equipment as stated above apply.

  • Photography may not impede the experience or access to artworks for other visitors.

  • The flying of drones is not permitted over Glenstone property.

Self-led Groups

  • Groups must not sit on stairs, block walkways or doorways or impede egress for other Glenstone visitors. In tight art spaces, groups will be asked to break into smaller groups.

  • Microphones, speakers or other audio amplifying equipment is not permitted, except for assistive listening devices.

Service Animals

  • By law, only service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are allowed entry.

  • Visitors may not leave animals unattended in their vehicles under any circumstances, by law.

Smoke-Free Campus

  • Glenstone is a smoke-free campus. The use of tobacco, marijuana, or vaping devices is prohibited in all locations including parking lots. 

Weapons & Hazardous Materials

  • Weapons of any kind are prohibited. This includes:

  • Firearms of any type and/or ammunition

  • Cutting tools, including knives, scissors, and blades

  • Tools and tool parts that could reasonably be used as weapons

  • Any “dual-use” items that could be considered dangerous to people or art including hammers, saws, sharp objects, poles, and sticks.

  • Hazardous materials of any kind are prohibited. This includes:

    • Pepper spray

    • Mace

    • Other chemical or biological agents that could pose a safety risk, including flammable liquids, aerosols, fuels, fireworks, toxic chemicals and explosives.
