Alex Da Corte (b. 1980, Camden, New Jersey) works across a range of media, including installation, video, sculpture, performance, and painting. The Philadelphia-based artist takes inspiration from art history, pop culture, architecture, and personal experience. Da Corte flattens hierarchies between references by melding contemporary with historical and popular with obscure. Drawing on his training as an animator and extensive knowledge of media history, the artist blurs the boundaries between reality and make-believe. The resulting artworks explore themes of humor, satire, violence, and tenderness, often rendering the familiar uncanny by positioning popular characters and symbols in surprising new contexts.
