Cy Twombly

The Pavilions, Room 11

HERORoom11

Though perhaps best known for his paintings, Cy Twombly (b. 1928, d. 2011) developed a singular body of sculpture throughout the course of his career. Composed of everyday materials such as wood, metal, and found objects, Twombly applied to each a delicate, unifying layer of white paint. The resulting group of works appear not as a series but, individually, as a metamorphosis of material. Selected in collaboration with the artist prior to his death, this group of five pieces together represent the elegant yet idiosyncratic breadth of Twombly’s sculptural practice.
