A selection of bronze sculptures by Simone Leigh is on view in Room 1 of the Pavilions. Sentinel (Mami Wata), 2020–21, features an abstracted female form encircled by a serpent. Leigh describes the work as “my interpretation of a West African water spirit, a deity who has destructive powers as well as creative-generative ones.” Placed nearby is Sharifa, 2022, a portrait of the artist’s friend, writer and activist Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts.
