Six-spotted Tiger Beetle

Cicindela sexguttata

If you are walking Glenstone’s grounds in the spring or early summer, you may spot the six-spotted tiger beetle (Cicindela sexguttata) darting along the Woodland Trail and boardwalks. Six-spotted tiger beetles are small (about half an inch) but fast, utilizing their speed to hunt down other insects and arthropods. These vibrant beetles are metallic green or blue with long legs, large mandibles, and bulging eyes. As their name implies they often—but not always—have white spots along the edges of their elytra (hardened wing cover).
