In Bloom: May and June
Virginia spiderwort, Tradescantia virginiana, is a versatile wildflower equally at home in the meadow and the backyard garden. Spiderwort is a long-blooming perennial which flowers non-stop for months, even though each bloom lasts only one day. It can reach three feet in height in sunnier locations and is partially prostrate in shady woodlands. Each flowerhead typically bears up to 20 blue/purple flowers which are attractive to bumblebees, carpenter bees, halictid bees, and pollinating flies.
