In Bloom: March and April
Woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata) is a native wildflower commonly seen in wooded areas with rich, well-draining soils, though it is sometimes present in fields or meadows. It can bloom in colors from white to blue to pink, but it most often blooms in purple hues. At Glenstone, it makes a wonderful springtime contrast to the masses of yellow blooms of golden groundsel outside of the Café. It grows 10-14 inches tall, and its flowers are tubular, meaning that only pollinators with long tongues like butterflies, moths, and skippers can reach its nectar. Woodland phlox tends to be deer resistant, and over time will form large stands and mats of plants which can create a cloud of light purple flowers in the springtime.
