Summer Weather at Glenstone

A person holds a parasol near Split-Rocker.

Glenstone is open year-round, including the hot summer months.

Here are some ways we're keeping you cool:

Portable shade

  • Grab a complimentary parasol at the Arrival Hall to keep the sun at bay. (Plus - if a raincloud rolls through, you're already covered!)

Water, water everywhere

  • Water stations are available in every building and at multiple points along the Woodland Trail. We also offer cold to-go drinks at the Patio. The hibiscus lemonade is a fan favorite.

  • Bottled water is available for purchase at the Arrival Hall, Café, and Patio.

Rest, recover, and ride

  • Our indoor spaces are air-conditioned. Spend time cooling down in the Gallery, Pavilions, Café and Arrival Hall. All of these buildings are temperature controlled and have places to sit.

  • Outdoor benches are available around the site to pause for a moment of rest.

  • If a walk across the grounds seems daunting: request a complimentary cart ride to and from the Arrival Hall/Parking area. Carts stop at the Arrival Hall, near the Gallery building, and on the Woodland Trail.

Ask for help

  • For assistance and cart pickup from a designated cart stop, please contact the Glenstone Operations Center at 301-983-3936.

Additional Tips for Planning Ahead:

Dress for success

  • Wear light-colored clothing and a wide-brim hat and sunglasses to minimize heat exposure.

  • Apply SPF sunscreen before your visit and again on site if you're spending lots of time outside.

  • Bring a reusable water bottle to sip as you explore the grounds. Refills are available at water stations in buildings and on the Woodland Trail.

Stay informed

  • Check our website or ask a member of our team about weather impacts to our programs and offerings. On days with a heat advisory or heat warning, we will suspend certain outdoor programs and offerings such as the nature walk and visits to Michael Heizer's Collapse and Andy Goldsworthy's Clay Houses (Boulder-Room-Holes).
