Path Description

Students will spend time in Glenstone’s special exhibition, Ties of our common kindred. Timed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and drawing its title from the text, this exhibition celebrates the innovative  spirit of artists  in the United States.

The exhibition will cover a wide range of approaches to artistic production and will include works from Glenstone’s collection by artists that changed how we experience and understand art today.

Educators will find this path option to be most appropriate for students who are being introduced to modern and contemporary art for the first time or who need a refresher on modern and contemporary art history. This path is also a great option for students who are aspiring artists and want to develop a distinct and groundbreaking voice.

This is also an option for social studies, history, or government classes exploring social movements and artistic responses.

Path Goals

On this path, students will:

  • learn about artists working in the United States in the 20th and 21st century whose body of work redefined the way we experience and understand art.

  • learn about artworks that represent key movements from the post-WWII era.

Maryland State Standards

This path was designed to meet Maryland State Fine Arts Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding. The standards are used as a guide for our discussions and make stronger connections to the current state-wide curriculum.
